If you are a psychotherapist, or simply have an interest in psychotherapy, and you want to know more about the theory that started it all, this excellent introductory program has been designed for you. This twenty-four-week course combines teaching of basic concepts of psychoanalysis with presentation of clinical cases and explanation of therapy technique. Knowledge and understanding of concepts such as transference and counter-transference can be of enormous help in making sense of interactions with patients and clients, no matter what your preferred modality of treatment.

This new program is offered by the Toronto Psychoanalytic Society in response to the growing interest of individuals who want more than their education has offered to date. Although it is not a training program, it could certainly lead to one. Seminars are taught by experienced teachers, and will be held on Thursday evenings, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.

The fall term typically begins with an introduction and historical overview of fundamental concepts. Questions such as what psychoanalysis is, how it can be helpful will be explored. This is followed by a number of seminars focusing on the original work of Freud, including several of his famous case histories. The final section in the fall term addresses core concepts such as transference/counter-transference, defence/resistance, character, affect, attachment theory, and child development.

The winter term includes a more in-depth study of the different schools of psychoanalysis spanning classical and contemporary, including ego psychology, object relations, self psychology, intersubjectivity, and relational theory. Finally, the curriculum finishes with several seminars on practical applications of theory to technique and with an update on recent scientific developments such as neuropsychonalysis.

This program is open to mental health professionals and other professionals who are interested in learning about the ideas and theories of psychoanalytic therapy. The educational requirement is a master's or other professional degree. All applicants will be interviewed by a member of the Committee.
Starting date for the new class: September 2008
Tuition: $1500
Application fee: $150
The program meets the accreditation criteria of the College of Family Physicians and has been accredited for 24 Main-Pro M1 credits. It has been recognized under section one of the Framework for Maintenance of Certification of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. We are accepting late applications.
